New Millennium Wind Energy Hopes to Revolutionize Rooftop Turbines

Colorado based New Millennium Wind Energy has designed a 30 foot spherical wind turbine dubbed the Turbinator with hopes that it will provide electricity directly to big box retailers and office buildings. Andrew Thacker, founder and principle engineer, was seen on Denver’s 9 News this past Friday. Thacker claims that the Turbinator will produce 60 to 700 kilowatts, depending on wind speeds. According to the interview, the device will work in four to ninety mile per hour winds.

Thacker stated that more than two-thirds of the electricity in this country is consumed by the four following groups: big box retailers, office towers, universities, and hospitals. The goal of the Turbinator is to provide electricity directly to these locations instead of being fed back into the grid. Information on the website, which remains under construction at this juncture, is scarce. The company appears to have been founded in either 2008 or 2009. Both dates appear on the site.

According to Thacker, the company has received approximately $23 million in start up funding and has orders for 32 devices. Exact cost per unit remains unclear, but will range between $149,000 and $800,000. At this point the technology remains under development and therefore untested. Construction of a prototype remains a crucial component in determining the effectiveness of the Turbinator.

    Another rooftop wind turbine scam.

    Jimbo,

Unfortunately, there have been few details and little information on a working prototype. If and when they do produce a newsworthy development, we will make sure to follow up on it.

These people give wind energy a bad name.  Just like the “Honeywell” turbine. Badly engineered, over priced and impractical.

Giant wind turbines are only cost effective where there is WIND and lots of it and only then when the turbine is on top of a tall tower.   The energy available on most rooftops is nearly zero in comparison.  You’d be way better off to install solar panels.

    Snake oil remains.

The search for greater efficiencies is undeniable. While photovoltaic arrays are great in many ways, they only make sense economically in a limited number of places. Until prices come down and efficiencies increase, there will be a market for “snake oil.” Perhaps something like the Bloom Energy Servers (http://www.bloomenergy.com/products/) will be the answer. While human ingenuity and innovation is vast, conservation is less so. The holy grail may or may not be out there. Until we know, there will be a number of technologies that tease us before we find something that works. There’s always nuclear fusion.

Sounds like they suckered the good folks in Kansas to build them a mult-million dollar facility. Doesn’t anyone investigate companies and claims like this before spending tax payer’s money? Windspire, windcube, now the Turbinator. Scam.

Rooftop VAWT is practical in some situations, but the total installed cost per watt better be somewhere well under $1 or else its a waste. I am totally confused how they are building a factory without a prototype? Engineering? Patents?

I can’t say I’m familiar with the Kansas facility, but as the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704364004576132453701004530.html) reported on Range Fuels, also from Colorado, there are numbers of these types of projects that get massive capital, but never produce. That is part of how our current system works.

I don’t have any information on the factory. When I wrote the piece last year, there was little information on a working prototype. The website is largely unchanged since then. The “investor” page their site is a contact form to receive further information: http://nmwenergy.com/investor.htm

Thank goodness someone is trying to use technologies that are used in Americas Space Program to lower energy costs down here on Earth….. with units that are “next” to or “On” a building.  The era of acres of solar panels and the fields of huge, ugly bird killin, wind catchers has to evolve sooner than later.

I trust that enough folks have looked into companies like this to pay for a building….. or they simply don’t care about their jobs!

Keep the faith.  Be a part of the Technology Evolution Invention Revolution.

These guys claim to have a proprietary “new” turbine, yet won’t show it in action?    Have a look at my turbine, we kept it’s development secret until we had a real working model to show people.   Google ART Turbine  or watch one of our youtube video’s
