10,000 Chevy Volts Planned for 2011

The Wall Street Journal reports that General Motors “will build 10,000 Chevrolet Volts in 2011 and another 30,000 in 2012.” Details had been few and far between regarding GM’s foray into electrically powered cars.

According to the story, “The Volt will go on sale later this year in California, Washington, D.C., Austin, Texas, and around New York City.” Both California and the greater New York City are already home to a number of alternatively powered cars. The Honda Clarity FCX, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, was released in Southern California last year, and an electric version of the Cooper Mini was made available in the greater New York area. California was also home to the release of GM’s earlier electric vehicle, the EV-1, which was immortalized in the documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?”

Next Year, General Motors will add Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut and the rest of New York and Texas to the markets. The automaker hosted an online chat yesterday during which Tony DiSalle, marketing director for the Volt, said that they anticipate selling the car in all 50 states within two years.

Yesterday, on ChevroletVoltage.com, “GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre announced Texas, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey as additional retail launch markets for the Chevrolet Volt.  To celebrate, the Volt will be going on a 1,776 mile ‘Freedom Drive’ from Austin, Texas to New York City, where it will arrive on July 4.”

While pricing figures remain uncertain, rumors have the car selling in the $40,000 range, which should place it in the same price bracket as Tesla Motors’ planned sedan.
