We write a lot about the the need to close the loop in consumerism, go cradle-to-cradle, and just buy less stuff. In the modern world, however, it isn’t always so easy. Technology improves so quickly that the top of the line cellphone or laptop you bought just two years ago now seems outdated. The newest gadgets are faster, have better battery life, and are packed with new and improved features. What’s a consumer to do? Recycling the gadgets is the obvious answer as a step towards an eventual regenerative economy. But recycling can often seem like a chore and is often filled with Do’s and Don’ts that make it frustratingly annoying.
Enter Gazelle.com, a fast and easy way to recycle your old gadgets, get some cash, and keep electronics out of the landfills. We briefly mentioned them in this post last year. They offer a wide range of categories for recycling and make it easy to use by paying for shipping, sending you a box, and giving you money (how much depends on the age and condition of the device, of course) for the gadgets you are recycling. Below is there purpose statement and a list of currently accepted products. I’m planning on testing out the service soon and will let you know my thoughts.
It is our purpose – and our promise – to provide a practical, rewarding way for people to finally rid themselves of all those old cell phones, digital cameras, and gaming systems that they no longer use, but can’t seem to find a way to let go of.
Too often when people think of recycling, they rush straight to smashing things into bits for parts. We believe that reuse should always come first. If your GPS unit still works, why not keep it in circulation AND get paid for it? If reusing isn’t in the cards, then let us recycle that vintage camcorder. We think of it as ReCommerce.
Yeah, we’re green.
Green for you with dollars in your pocket. Green for the environment with fewer electronics being trashed.
It’s good to Gazelle. That’s our promise.
