A recent post about energy vampires and the phantom load was inspired by last month’s conclusion of the Green Cup Challenge (GCC). Started by a few schools in the northeast, the Green Cup Challenge is a friendly competition among schools that started a handful of years ago. “The first Green Cup Challenge™ was launched as an interschool energy challenge in 2006 at Phillips Exeter Academy, Northfield Mount Hermon and the Lawrenceville School. In 2007, the Green Cup Challenge™ included fifteen boarding schools and joined with the Green Schools Alliance to formally become a GSA program.”
Currently hosted by the Green School Alliance (GSA), the competition has grown to include a video component (with an example below), as well as the energy reduction component. Schools submit a video related to energy savings. Searching YouTube will yield a wealth of these videos. The following is from The Hill School in Pennsylvania.
The purpose of the competition is to reduce the energy consumption from February of the current year as compared to an average of the preceding three Februaries. Although it began amongst independent schools, “The GCC invites all schools — public and private, day and boarding schools — to measure and reduce campus electricity use and GHG emissions, and supports campus greening efforts including recycling and water conservation.” Perhaps next February more schools will participate in the challenge. Contact the GSA and see if your local school can get involved.
