Data Protection Goes Green   December 9th, 2009

USB.Copy.NotifyiStock_000003227626XSmallFor all those interested in computers and protecting the ever-increasing amounts of sensitive data that we store on them while limiting energy use, today we present a guest post from Zarir M. Karbhari, Chief Architect of green data protection software USB CopyNotify! The software “raises an immediate alert when removable USB storage is used on any computer on the network thus preventing the unauthorized copying of confidential information.” Below is a short explanation of the technology from Mr. Karbhari.

With release of version 1.5 upwards, the authors of USB CopyNotify! provide data protection keeping energy conservation in mind. Not only does the software prevent possible data leaks in the office network due to unauthorized usage of USB removable storage devices but also sends alerts when computers are left idle and could be switched off to save energy/power.

First released in September 2007, USB CopyNotify! plugs the data leak that takes place in most offices due to unauthorized usage of USB devices such as USB Thumb / Flash Drives. USB CopyNotify! raises an immediate alert when removable USB storage is used on any computer on the network thus preventing the unauthorized copying of confidential information. Included in these alerts is the ‘Save’ Energy alert that sends a notification when any computer in the office has been left idle for more than a specified amount of time. Hence these unused computers could be switched off, resulting in the saving of power/energy, the bringing down of electricity bills, and the contribution to energy conservation. Our aim was just to make our users aware of the possible wastage of energy that takes place frequently in the office.

Conservation is often called the low-hanging fruit of the energy revolution. Something as simple as sending an alert to the IT department or to computer owners about computers idling for long periods of time could make a big difference. Check out this Green IQ post to see the mind-blowing amount of electricity wasted in the U.S. each year by appliances in standby mode. Finding out which computers have been left on after their users have gone home for the evening could save businesses or building managers money on their electricity costs while reducing pollution, saving energy for more productive uses.
