Tesla Starts Taking Reservations for Their S Sedan

tesla-sedanAs mentioned on TechCrunch, the all electric Tesla S Sedan will soon come to market. The company has started taking reservations, lining up 520 potential buyers in one week. In order to reserve the car, each customer must pay a $5,000 fee, with deliveries starting in 2011. If you’re interested in getting one, you can reserve it here.

Expected to be available next year, the base price for the car is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. The car marks an attempt by Tesla to bring down the price of their all-electric offerings as they reach for mass production and a wider market. Chairman Elon Musk has stated that his goal is nothing short of revolutionizing the car industry. If they can keep producing beautiful cars with superior performance and bring down costs, he may very well succeed. While $50,000 is still a hefty sum, the bet is that an all-electric car that has great performance and looks as sleek and cool as the S Sedan does will reach a broader audience and stir public interest. According to Tesla, “three battery pack options offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge. With the 45 minute QuickCharge or a 5 minute battery swap, you can drive from LA to San Francisco or Washington to New York in about the same time as in a conventional car.” The car also goes from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and has “more cargo space than station wagons.” The sedan is the company’s second offering, coming on the heels of the Tesla Roadster sports car.

The current state of the car industry is bleak, to be  sure. U.S. car manufacturers are now feeling the pain from their inability to make dramatic production, design, and business changes over the last couple decades. While it is hopeful they can reinvent themselves and survive, companies like Tesla are already showing their ingenuity and pushing the envelope as to what electric cars can do. Here’s to their continued perseverance and success.
