With China’s impressive Olympic extravaganza last summer in Beijing, those cities bidding to host the 2016 Olympics Games are looking for ways to stand out. Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo are all in the running, while London will hold the Olympics in 2012. Tokyo today submitted its candidature file and unveiled a conceptual drawing (above) of what would be the main Olympic Stadium. A large portion of Tokyo’s sales pitch focuses on making it “the most compact, sustainable, and financially-stable” Games ever. An article from the Yomiuri Shimbun (Japanese) said it better: Tokyo Olympics- Cheap, Clean, and Compact. More details can be read on the official Tokyo 2016 website but here are a few highlights:
- Aiming to keep half of all tickets under 5,400 yen (approx. $60)
- Placing “95% of competition venues within an 8-km (5 mile) radius and 70% of venues within 10 minutes of the Olympic Village”
- Installing solar panels on the roof of the Main Stadium that will produce over 10,000 kilowatt hours- an amount equal the daily energy consumption of 1000 Japanese households
- Giving Olympic officials electric and fuel-cell vehicles to use for transportation
- Using the extensive, efficient, and extremely punctual train system to transport the masses
